Shawntasia Green advocates for compassion.

By Shawntasia Green

Should mercy killing be legal? Euthanasia is painlessly putting to death someone suffering from an incurable and/or painful disease or physical disorder by withholding treatment. It gives people with no hope of recovery to choose when and how they want to end their life. Mercy killing or euthanasia should be legal.

Making euthanasia legal would save many lives. Organ Donation Euthanasia (ODE) would increase the number of organ transplants. Every year thousands of patients die waiting on an organ transplant. If euthanasia was legalized the patients could donate their organs. So their sacrifice could save many others.

Most patients don’t want to be a burden to the family. Watching someone you love in pain is terrible. Euthanaisa would help shorten the suffering and grief of loved ones. Family members wouldn’t have to sit and watch their family members in pain. Or wait for them to die.

Euthanasia is humane. It would be considerable and compassionate to let patients with uncontrollable pain choose to end that suffering. Only the patient knows how the pain of illness and prolonged death impacts their lives. The patient should be able to advocate whether or not they would like to continue living with pain.

Some people would say that euthanaisa is murder. It is not truly murder if a person is choosing to end their own life. But people with great physical or mental suffering shouldn’t have to continue their suffering against their wishes.

Readers should do more research and share more thoughts about euthanasia with others. They should talk about how passive euthanasia is legal but active isn’t. Think about what you or a loved one would want.
