Jerell Swindler offers his view on the school day.

By Jerell Swindler

Have you ever felt groggy in the morning and it hindered your learning experience ? If so, the majority of teenagers are probably in the same boat as you. I believe that school should start later as it could greatly help students on their paths to educational success.

If school started later, some of the students' grades will be better. Most students are not morning students, like they don't like to be bothered in the morning. In an article title “What's the best time to exercise ? Morning or evening?” it says “students whose start times were delayed, final grades were 4.5 percent higher, compared with students who took the class when school started earlier”. That's why I feel as if school should start later than it does.

If school started later most students would not be going to sleep in class. One big reason I say that is because I see it in my classes. I feel that it will give students more time to sleep so that they will be well rested to start the day at school and ready to learn and stay focused.

Some students drive to school so getting up that early can cause drowsy driving and can cause wrecks. If you are sleepy you shouldn't drive because you can go to sleep while driving and you can wreck .

Some people say that if school started later the students would not have enough time for after school curriculums and sporting events. If they have practice or events they can do those things before school, since school would be starting later. Early in the morning is better for physical activities than it is for mental activities. In the same article cited earlier, it says “One recent paper indicates that morning exercise may activate certain genes in the muscle cells, boosting their ability to metabolize sugar and fat. While scientists say this finding requires further study, they think it ultimately might help those who are overweight or suffering from Type 2 diabetes.” So students practicing sports in the morning would be better off for their overall health.

I think that people should appeal to their school board members that they want to start school later if you agree with me. Starting school later will improve the early morning wrecks, no sleeping in class and better grades on the end of the year tests, as well as improving students’ health and fitness.
