Sean Mahoney- World History Teacher
A new face in our halls, Mr. Sean Mahoney, has just the right energy this school needs! Teaching World History is a passion of his; he gets inspired by the good results of his students’ work, and he has big plans for this school. But, what else does WF need to know about Mahoney?
Not only a teacher, but also a dad, Mahoney is father to a freshman here at WF. A career change brought him here.
“After I had left the cable industry because of some health related issues, I renewed my certification, my teaching licence and then it happened real quick. Usually you don't hear from the interviewers in a long time, but this wasn't the case. This year will be my sixth year teaching. I just love talking with kids about the different topics, I want them to think about it rather than just memorise names and dates,” said Mahoney.
Mahoney got his undergraduate degree from State University of New York, his home state. His specialties are Cultural Studies and Anthropology. He has been taking graduate courses, working on his Master’s. “I’m in a good spot now. I am back to teaching, which I didn't think I would be doing again,“ said Mahoney.
Seeing people succeed after they have struggled is what inspires him the most. he enjoys seeing students working hard and achieving success; it keeps him going to see that glow, that they have achieved something, no matter how hard, that they get it. Other than teaching, Mahoney has other interests and talents. He plays the guitar, and if he is feeling down, he can pick up the instrument.
“Just a song can change my outcome on things and lift up my spirits and keep me going,” Mahoney said.
West Florence High School is a place he likes, a “good fit,” as he said. Achieving his goals are important to him, and he plans to get his Master's Degree or a National Certification, while teaching at the same time.
Mahoney said he believes that fire changed humanity’s fate, and we have high hopes that Mr. Mahoney will change our school for better! We welcome you, sir!
