Darlin Jordan - Oct. Teacher of Month

It is no secret that Darlin Jordan is loved by Knight Nation, but West is not the only community on which she has left her positive teaching mark.

Even though she is from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Jordan has moved around a lot as to her husband is a US Marshall; their last home before Florence was in South Dakota. Moving around has given her different opportunities in teaching, and she has taught almost every subject to every single grade.

Moving from different places is a change in itself, but even more change was geared towards her teaching. When it came down to teaching Academic Enrichment, “I knew I needed a change. I have literally taught every single subject and every single grade, and I really wanted a change,” Jordan said. She was one of 24 applicants for Academic Enrichment.

What are her favorite units to teach?

“Positive mental health, no, the mental health, no, nutrition, no, alcohol, no, tobacco, no, bullying..,” she said.

When it comes to teaching the information, she uses energetic and creative methods to get to her students.

“I deliver a lot of cheese, because I have my own unique sense of humor that they find funny for some reason,” Jordan said.

She also engages her classes with hands on activities and labs for every unit that she tackles with her students.

With a positive mind and heart, her good intentions are evident regarding her goals for her students.

“[I hope] that when they leave me they will be better people and better students than they were when they came,” said Jordan.

Her good intentions not only flow through the education of her students at West Florence, but also to her past jobs. Jordan’s first job was taking over a maternity leave for a teacher who taught Kindergarten.

“I would never want to go back and do that again, but I do have a sense of regret that maybe I failed them in some way, so maybe I would’ve done things a little bit differently,” she said.

Although she didn’t have the best experience, her feelings towards the past experience only proves how thoughtful she is of others, which is even more displayed through her days at West Florence.
