Britton Yarborough: helping students achieve their goals
School counselors play a large role in high school student’s lives. They encourage and support students throughout some of the hardest years of their lives. Britton Yarborough, one of West Florence’s new school counselors, is determined to make high school amazing for all of the students she helps.
Drawing from her personal experience, Yarborough said the biggest obstacle she’s faced through her career is, “overcoming being quiet and shy and being comfortable with change.”
When she was in high school, Yarborough’s favorite part of the year was playing basketball, softball and volleyball. She stated that it taught her the importance of being a team player, and that was one of the greatest lessons she learned in high school.
Because of her high school sports experience, Yarborough encourages students to get involved and try something new during these years. Her favorite part of high school was the memories she gained from sports, and she wants the students that go to West Florence to have the same experience.
When she was in college at Francis Marion University, Yarborough worked especially close with the school counselors there. Seeing them shape the career of the students they worked with made her decide she wanted to do the same when she graduated.
Her first job out of college was as a Admissions Counselor at the same college she graduated from, FMU. This is truly where she fell in love with helping students achieve their goals.
Now working at West Florence, Yarborough says that working with high school students is different, but she enjoys it. It allows her to become a positive role model and build relationships with her students.
Her favorite part of her job is working with students to help them achieve their goals. Yarborough’s least favorite (like most students and teachers) is her early alarm clock. She wakes up between 4:30am and 5:00am every single day!
When she isn’t working, Yarborough is spending time with her children and husband or exercising. Running is her favorite!
Next time you see Yarborough in the halls or in the guidance office, make sure you introduce yourself and welcome her to the Castle!
