Coach Jarvis: life, sports, and priorities
“....my life is all about sports” - Coach Daryl Jarvis
The man who said this is a basketball coach as well as a teacher of Academic Enrichment at West Florence. His name is Daryl Jarvis. He started his career in sports when he was younger. He has been a basketball coach for 18 years with six years Varsity Heading Coach experience. He decided to be a basketball coach because it is one of his favorites sports.
Jarvis said he chose to work at West Florence because he thinks it is a great opportunity. He was a teacher in an elementary school these past two years and he was ready to get back to high school.
“I was ready to get back with teenagers,” he said. “I’m a competitive person.”
As an Academic Enrichment teacher Jarvis helps the students who have problems with their grades. The way he helps them is by having a conversation with the students and asking them how could it be happened. But if it is an effort thing on their part, he is going to have a different conversation.
“I called it ‘Re-focus training’ conversation but others called it punishment,” he said.
As a multiple-job person, he manages his time wisely.
“You have to have a prioritize, what comes first and then organize it,” he said.
He also has his own calendar to keep track of what he does every day or make sure that all of the schedules are going smoothly.
Coach Jarvis even joins sport clubs outside of school. He is playing bowling, golf, football and gym with his children. He is helping his kids to win competitions but he also hopes to help them to be good citizen, reaching their goals, go to college and be successful people.
Jarvis really loves sports and will always love them.
“My father is a coach and my brother plays football. They are two people who inspired me in sports. My life is all about sports,” he said.
