To Nesbitt school counseling all about helping others

The chatter of administrators can be faintly heard outside the room as Travis Nesbitt, a counselor here at WF, talks about his first year at the school. The first thing one will notice about Nesbitt is his friendly personality. His enthusiasm to answer the newspaper’s questions was uplifting.

“Counseling is something that I’ve always done, as a child, and in high school, growing up as a young adult. So it just seemed like the right move to do professionally,” he said.

He also said that he had a love of helping others. He stated that the best part of his job as a counselor is helping others and guiding the younger generation into being positive people of the future. If a student would like to be a counselor then Nesbitt advises them to make sure that they truly want to be in the field of helping others.

Nesbitt is currently going on his fourth year as a counselor, but this is his first year working at West. He said that the things that stood out the most to him about West is how welcoming a committee we have and how receptive the students are to counseling.

As a teen he went to Timberline High, and then he went to the University of South Carolina. Currently,, he is going to South Carolina State in order to get his doctorate, so he will soon become Dr. Nesbitt.

According to Nesbitt, there is no ‘typical day’ for a counselor. Everyday is different. No two days are the same for a counselor at West. Somedays a counselor might work with a student to change a schedule, others he or she might be trying to help students plan out their graduation.

“When you walk into the building,” Nesbitt said, “anything can happen.”

When he has free time, Nesbitt enjoys reading, writing, and said that he was an “artist at heart.”

His favorite book is The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The music he enjoys is extremely varied; he said that he loves all kinds: jazz, rap, R&B, gospel, punk, rock, and rap.

And what does he think about WF?

“I’m happy to be here. I appreciate the opportunity to be at West,” he said.
