Powers ready to rock with WF Marching Knights

“I am privileged to be a member of Knight Nation,” said Mr. Johnny Powers, Knight band director and one of West Florence’s newest staff members for the 2019-2020 school year. He is from Florence; more specifically, he is an alumni of WF, and he is ready to rock out a new season with the West Florence marching band.

Powers enjoys hobbies such as watching and playing soccer, baseball, and cheering for college football. He also enjoys spending time with his family (pictured to left with his wife)) and playing with his two labs. In his free time, he also enjoys playing disc golf and watching LIVE PD.

Band first caught his eye when he was in 5th grade at Moore Intermediate School. What is amazing is that that the same person who directed Powers in band is now the Arts Coordinator for Florence 1 Schools, Mrs. Laura Greenway. Powers participated in band through his middle school years and high school years. Once he graduated, he attended the University of South Carolina and marched with “The Mighty Sound of The South East” band all four years of college.

Micheal Jones, his high school band director, was a true role model to him. When Powers was in the 8th grade he was invited to march with the high school band and that’s when he knew he would stick with band for the rest of his life.

“I'm living it. I always wanted to be an educator,” he said when asked about his dream job.
