Deaver returns!
Kevin Deaver, tenth grade world history teacher, has returned to West Florence High School after a one year hiatus. Deaver said he is “forever young.” Deaver described his first week back at school as busy and fast. He said that he was “very excited” coming back to school.
After he took last year off, Deaver said he realized that teaching is what he was supposed to do.
Deaver described himself as “adaptable” as a teacher because he’s very constructive and believes in meeting students where they are at the moment. Deaver believes in helping young people be prepared for the real world.
“I learned a lot of things the hard way,” he said and he would rather teach students the right thing to do rather than face consequences of their actions without thinking about it first.
Speaking of learning, some advice he would have for students who are having a bad day is “accept the way you feel, allow yourself to feel what you feel, and then learn to get things done while you are experiencing what you are going through.” What he means by this is you learn a lot more when you are going through something and having challenges to become a better person and student.
Something Deaver said he would change about school to make students happier is “year round school” so breaks are more divided throughout the year and smaller classes so teachers and students could build better relationships. He also talked about advice for seniors before and after graduating.
“Learning to work, learning to enjoy a challenge, and learning that it is okay if something isn’t easy,” he said.
If Deaver were not a high school teacher, he said he would like to be in “public relations” because he could help people with their images.
Outside of school Deaver enjoys spending time with his family, including his two beautiful daughters.
