Daniel mans new STEM elective: Drones!

West Florence has an exciting new STEM elective for the students: DRONES!

“It’s not about the subject; [it] more has to be about the individual students," said drone teacher Benjamin Daniel about his subject.

Daniel teaches drone and video game designs. He said he enjoys spending time with his students and helping them really understand the concepts in his classroom. Last year, he taught video and web game design at John W. Moore Middle School. Daniel admits the new environment of teaching older students is a little different than his last teaching position at Moore Middle.

Daniel describes a drone as “A unmanned flying vehicle” that can fly while the controller is on the ground. While interviewing Daniel, he let a student fly one and I really saw how interesting the science of remote flight could be.

This extraordinary teacher has an array of hoops hanging in his class from the ceiling. Trying to tediously get a drone through the hoop, the student crashed the drone into a wall. Daniel assured the student that many of the students crash and it was a common thing.

Daniel sais he tries to make sure each and every student understands the material and he tries his best to be hands-on, especially in a class where they are constantly playing with drones and creating video games. He builds his students' knowledge up, slowly giving students more things to learn. He said he tries his best to reach each and every student to help them understand.

A surprising fact about Danile is that he actually never wanted to fly drones. Daniel actually has a passion for acting, which is a totally different department then flying drones and teaching students how to design video games. In his spare time, Daniel enjoys doing local voice work and theater production.

On a personal note, Daniel is engaged to be married this October. Congratulations to Mr. Daniel and welcome to WF!
