Hatfield brings cheer and energy to bookkeeper position

West Florence High School has a new bookkeeper named Cynthia Hatfield!

“I'm actually a bookkeeper today because of time, chance, and circumstance. I'd previously been employed at another district position for 14 years and had been wanting to do something different for the past few years,¨ Hatfield said about her new job.

Hatfield also said that she did not always do bookkeeping with the schools. She previously had a job at Florence One Schools but it had been split in two jobs with less pay due to budget cuts.

Hatfield said that someone noticed the bookkeeper job posted and brought it to her attention. She talked it over with her director.

¨She thought I'd be good at it and surprised me by making a reference call to the principal here at West,¨ said Hatfield “The rest is history!”

There are plenty of interesting things that bookkeepers do based on Hatfield said. For example, they maintain the financial record and also submit payments to vendors and make deposits for the school.

Outside of school, Hattfield said that she loves reading and she also likes to decorate.

“I was really into decorating. I had friends who would call me to decorate their baby showers, wedding showers, and Christmas trees. I even decorated for a friend's wedding and reception,” she said.

Hatfield also likes the college football team of the University of Carolina. She also mentioned that one of her favorite books is The Great Gatsby. When it comes to TV, she very much enjoys documentaries about science and history.

Hatfield has a loving family of six, three daughters, one son and a husband to whom she has been married since 1991. All of her children graduated from South Florence High School. mentioned that there was a small family rivalry because she works at West Florence now.

Hatfield said her role model is her grandmother, Tula Collins Gause, who graduated from Coker College in the early 1900s, an unusual accomplishment for a woman of the time.

“She worked as both a school teacher and a school principal. She had 10 children, worked at the school, helped out on the farm, and still managed to have her children in church every Sunday, ” she said.

Hatfield is happy to be here at West Florence High School.

“I am enjoying being here in West Florence, and I love meeting new people, so please feel free to stop in, introduce yourself, and say hi!” she said.
