Love of teaching, learning motivates Hughes
Rhett Hughes is a new Social Studies teacher at West Florence High School. Hughes is originally from Miami, Florida. Hughes’ original interest in teaching came through tutoring athletes in college.
“After that I just fell in love with teaching,” he said.
Hughes’ favorite part of teaching is getting to form lasting relationships that leave a big positive impact in his students’ lives. Hughes describes himself as a laid back teacher that just wants to make his student's learning experience enjoyable.
Hughes helps anybody and anyway he can. He will try to help students with literally anything, especially giving out advice. For example, his advice to students who want good grades is to study, work hard, and ask questions in class and students should be ok.
So does Hughes think it is hard being a high school teacher?
“Yes, in some ways, but I love it,” he said.
He talked about making lesson plans for class and he said he tries to make a lesson that connects to his students. Hughes, who looks very young, has been teaching for 22 years. His first five years were spent in Knoxville, TN and the 17 years after that he taught in Darlington County.
Hughes said that he enjoys teaching in general because it makes him feel good to help others accomplish their goals and help them get to the next level. Even though Hughes is new here at WF, he wants his students to know that he cares and he is willing to help them succeed.
Hughes is also a very adventurous person. Hughes said that in his spare time,,away from teaching, he likes to go camping with his family.
Rhett Hughes is an amazing person, friend, and teacher. He will do all he can to help, no matter who one is.
