Starr happy to be at WF

New WF teacher Joseph Starr is glad to be here at WF. Starr teaches mostly 9th graders for Geography, 11th graders for US History and 10th graders for World History.

Starr said he likes teaching History and Geography the most; he said that he has always been good with things that involved history. He has been a teacher for 10 years and before that he used to tutor and do different activities involving education. He has also taught in different places like Hartsville Middle School, and Hartsville High School; he also taught at Coker University.

Starr said he thinks that West Florence is a great high school for students to go and attend. Starr has had family members in WF like his Step-Brother and his Step-Sister graduate from West Florence, and his son comes here too.

Starr saw the job opening in the District Web Page and he came to West Florence because he had heard good things about this school and about the academic curriculum. He thought that the school was really good and he said he thought he would fit in perfectly.

Starr never really thought about being a teacher. Early on in his life, his dream job was to be a professional wrestler because he said it was or at least looked like fun. Starr is also a coach. He prefers to be called Coach Starr in school. He coaches baseball and volleyball; he actually used to play baseball when he was younger.

“I started playing baseball when I was really little,” Starr said; he was around like 4 or 5 years old because before baseball you have to play T-ball. He also said that he comes from a baseball family and that his mom's father played professional baseball so he said it runs in the family. He has been a baseball coach for 20 years. He has been a fan of the Atlanta Braves his whole life but he also likes the Cleveland Guardians. Starr also is an assistant coach for baseball here at West Florence.

In his free time he likes to go to the movies, go and eat at different restaurants, and go to sporting events. Starr said that he is a big movie person and that he likes going to the movies with his family and friends. Starr also likes to travel; he has been to Alaska for a week for a church trip, and to England.

Starr said that West Florence is great. He likes how the students are well behaved and he really likes Kastle Time. He likes Kastle time because it gives the students the opportunity to socialize with their friends. If we only had 20 minutes of lunch then we wouldn't have that much time to talk because we would have to eat quickly. Kastle Time also gives people time to go to clubs and experience different things. Clubs used to be after school and people couldn’t go to them if they had to go home by bus or their car was here early, so now people can go to any club and Starr said he likes that.

Overall, Starr is thankful to be here at West Florence!
